Be Like Others is a powerful documentary that explores gender reassignment surgeries in Iran. While same-sex relationships are punishable by death in the country, a 1987 fatwa issued by Ayatollah Khomeini allowed gender reassignment surgery for individuals “diagnosed as transgender.” The film follows the experiences of trans people under the care of Dr. Bahram Mir-Jalali in Tehran.
