Asog blends fictional and documentary elements to tell the story of what followed in the aftermath of Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda), which struck the Philippines in 2013. The film follows Jaya, a non-binary comedian and teacher who lost their television show due to the typhoon, as they embark on a cross-country journey to participate in a national drag beauty pageant. Along the way, Jaya reunites with their former student Arnel, who has lost his mother and is searching for his father. Together, they travel through typhoon-affected regions, meeting people and bearing witness to their stories. The film explores themes such as queer identity, climate change, colonialism, and land grabbing, all while incorporating elements of Filipino mythology and surreal animation to craft a poetic and powerful narrative.
