This documentary focuses on the life of Donna Personna, a trans activist and performance artist who is an iconic figure in San Francisco’s queer scene. Born in the 1950s into a conservative Baptist family in San Jose, Donna was forced to suppress her identity for many years—until she stepped onto the stage for the first time at age 59 and began to truly find her voice. The film follows her creative process as she co-writes a play about the 1966 Compton’s Cafeteria Riot in San Francisco, where trans women stood up against police violence. This artistic journey becomes a pathway for Donna to confront her past and attempt to reconnect with the family she had long been estranged from.
