Gay rights are a topic discussed worldwide, and Cuba is no exception. Free Havana offers a powerful portrayal of homosexuality in Cuba through the personal stories of six gay and lesbian individuals. From the Batista era to the Mariel Boatlift Revolution and present-day Cuba, the documentary traces the evolution of gay life, from a time when homosexuality was criminalized to the ongoing struggle for greater acceptance of sexual orientation freedom. With an honest and touching approach, the documentary shares the stories of six different Cubans, informing and inspiring viewers. Free Havana was shown in a shorter version at the 2006 Havana International Festival in Latin America, marking a turning point in LGBT cinema in Cuba, a country where strict censorship had previously been enforced.
