Maria Binder’s latest film, which won the Special Mention at the 2014 FACE Human Rights Competition with Trans X Istanbul, offers a fragmented perspective on Human Rights and trans individuals in Turkey. When a murder occurs, what remains behind? What does a trans life consist of? How can one cope with daily hate and violence? Director Binder follows the traces of resistance and survival instincts while bringing together those who have been marginalized; drawing inspiration from the words of Nazım Hikmet, Foucault, Benjamin, and Zeki Müren, she gathers fragments of trans lives. TransBUT is a documentary inquiry sparked by one question: “When everything is destroyed, how does a person continue to live?”
