After coming out as gay at the age of 18, George Ward—better known by his stage name, Cherry Valentine—left the Romanichal (English Romani) community in Darlington, England, to build a new life. Produced for BBC Three, this documentary follows Ward’s return to his hometown as he confronts his past and explores whether it’s possible to embrace both his queer and Romani identities. The film portrays an emotional journey in which Ward revisits his relationships with his family, reexamines the values of his community, and reflects on his personal sense of self. It concludes with a tribute segment honoring his life and legacy following his tragic death in 2022.
